il libro
The use of slang and non-Standard English in mass media communica- tion has become so pervasive in the last decades that it has increasingly attracted academic interest, especially in the field of discourse analysis. Periodical publications, such as consumer magazines, are a case in point. Why is slang considered an effective lexical option by text producers? How is it employed? And what is the outcome of such a choice?
This book investigates the communicative strategies enacted by "appro- priating" the vocabulary of youngsters and minorities and by using it to communicate with adult - and mostly white - target readers. Evidence is provided through critical discourse analysis carried out on six monthly magazines published in the United States. It has been observed that slang, by triggering in-group memories and a sense of collective identity, aims to modify the readers' emotional state and make them more open and receptive to overt and covert messages.
Moreover, the book argues that slang is exploited by magazines, not simply used or borrowed: the vocabulary created by less powerful groups, i.e. youngsters and minorities, is appropriated by the media, ove- rused to the point that it loses most of its creative and communicative punch, and finally redirected towards its creators.
